Why Bhutan?

Beneath Bhutan’s stunning landscapes and cultural richness lies a complex tapestry of challenges that affect both its human residents and its vulnerable animal population. At Zeus Nakulu Dog Shelter, we are committed to addressing these issues and improving the lives of animals in Bhutan.

The Challenges

  1. Income Inequality and Infrastructure:
    • Impact on Animals: Bhutan’s rapid development and income disparities create dangers for all residents, particularly its stray animals.
    • Misunderstandings and Stereotypes: Stray animals often face abuse and neglect due to cultural misunderstandings and damaging stereotypes, such as those regarding the native Pariah Dogs.
  2. Lack of Government Response:
    • Animal Cruelty: Bhutan lacks a government-funded response to animal cruelty, leading to thousands of abuse cases going unreported and unaddressed each year.
    • Weather Challenges: In cities like Thimphu, where summer temperatures can soar, stray animals are at risk of heat stress and dehydration, exacerbated by the lack of adequate shelter and resources.
  3. Impact of COVID-19:
    • Economic Fallout: The COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating effects on Bhutan’s economy and supply chains, including significant reductions in food waste from restaurants, a crucial food source for stray animals.
    • Increased Strain: Stray animals, accustomed to relying on food scraps, now face increased challenges in finding sustenance, leading to more desperate interactions with the local community.

Our Mission and Response

  1. Rescue and Rehabilitation:
    • Immediate Care: We rescue and provide immediate medical attention, shelter, and nourishment to animals in distress.
    • Rehabilitation: Our programs help animals recover physically and emotionally from abuse, neglect, or injuries.
  2. Advocacy and Education:
    • Community Engagement: We educate the public about humane treatment of animals, combatting stereotypes, and promoting adoption and fostering.
    • Policy Advocacy: We advocate for stronger animal welfare laws and government support for animal protection initiatives.
  3. Emergency Response:
    • COVID-19 Relief: During the pandemic, we have adapted our operations to provide essential support to animals affected by the economic downturn and reduced food availability.
